after waiting 3 long years, and finally getting the multi track session to do a b side, im proud to present the star blazers cover version of the masterpiece danger zone which was originally done my midnight express. many should be familiar with detroit producer recloose, while back in new zealand he assembled a band who called them selves star blazers (an ode to the 70s legendary japanimation series and a big hit on bostons tv38.. indeed recloose is from massachusetts) and they recorded a few cover tunes.upon hearing this i knew it was special. while most modern covers miss the mark, purely emulating and sounding like a cheap imitation, leaving me wanting to just play the original. they flip the tempo, swing and vibe, straight up owning this and making it their own.

with four original tracks from chris carrier, this new ep is based around the original detroit vibe, with a hint of acid. the tracks all take their titles from famous nuclear devices, giving the music a foreboding overtone. rds-1 was the first weapon developed by the russians during the arms race of the early 20th century. the track is deep, driving and morose yet full of life. trinity was the codename of the very first nuclear test in 1945, this track is a shivering acid beast, minimal and absorbing. bwr 3 takes its name from one of the reactors at the doomed fukushima plant, subtle elements of funk flow through this restrained number. lastly comes chicago pile 1, the worlds first ever nuclear reactor, and a track that embodies the ominous possibilities of such an invention.

motor city. the home of hi-tek soul. or simply, the origin. just a few of the names with which to descibe a city in the heart of america that has the power to captivate ones imagination. in the early 20th century it revolutionized transport, ushered in an age of previously unknown mobility and became the automotive capital of the world. during the 60s it gave us motown, one of the most influential r&b and soul record labels to ever exist. and, before the turn of the millennium, it would bring forth another musical revolution: the one called techno music. to abstract division, the city of detroit and its artists are a major source of inspiration. as such, they decided their newest metropolis ep was to be an hommage, a means of giving back. this special package includes an original track that keeps close to the spirit of melodic, rhythmic, minimalism detroit is known for. it also features three very special remixes by close friends oscar mulero - under his trolley route alias (which he hasnt released music under since 2010) - function, who ups the darker ante and marcel fengler who infuses it with his trademark berlin funk.

london-based artist the room below follows 2014’s dba debut (as part of the 015.5 v/a release) with a mixture of classic and experimental house sounds. born in bristol, raised in dorset and residing in the capital, henry keen aka the room below has been djing and collecting vinyl for over 20 years. as soundspecies alongside his brother he was championed by gilles peterson’s worldwide show and london institution cdr. the alias ‘the room below” was coined to coincide with henry’s analogue re-working of close friend paul white’s ‘rapping with’ lp. since then he has maintained this alias for his house and techno composition. they pay homage to the legendary chicago and detroit artists that inspired him back in the 80’s and 90’s.

deep disco warrior the revenge turns in an epic hypnotic mix of slow burning house nailed down by analogue bass and acid. using a filtered vocal it builds slowly as the bottom end is tweeked towards a mesmeric journey through minimal wigged out disco. sleazy mcqueen and romano arcaini turn in a disco inflected house mix with congas, spaces out synths and enough dynamics to keep any dancefloor bubbling. it builds with added percussion and a filtered pad before the lead hits the break and the track comes back in with even more wallop. drug empire is an original off the album and has had support from the likes of rune lindbaek, crazy p’s hot toddy and horse meat disco. said to be inspired by theo parrish’s productions it’s a delicious slice of bass driven deep disco with a nod to the looser end of detroit and chicago. it’s all about the fully locked in three note analogue moog bass which holds down the grooved out drums before breaking to jazzy rhodes at the end. one for the heads.

following up his debut on the label, jc laurent successfully returns with this memorbable four tracker, “southside” ep. using his influences from deep within berlin and detroit, he resumes where he left off, continually blurring the lines between techno and house with an uncanny ability to make it look easy.

ben christensen is a multi dimensional figure in detroit’s musical landscape. for years christensen has played with a number of acts and has collaborated with many different artists in the city from a variety of different musical backgrounds. “inouno” is christensen’s debut 12&#8243,, on his newly found imprint sector 7g. “inouno” is 7 minute house groover that nods to the classic house sound of the 90s, while keeping it modern, soulful and funky!! definitely a new producer to watch out for!

whilst he is primarily recognised for his bond with detroit and its varying strands of house and techno, seth troxler is an artist whose taste and collection spreads much further afield. through his own imprint soft touch, seth explores music from way beyond the motor citys borders as he seeks to outlet left-of-centre cuts that touch on interstellar guitar, calypso disco and seductive techno tracks. with the project inaugurated by clarian back in august of 2014, the second instalment comes from the visionquest and playhouse affiliated trio rework who draw from their unique meld of synths and vocals and turn in their lovecall ep
